Later Matters - Tackling Race Inequalities for BME Older People

Age Concern Yorkshire and Humber are managing an exciting new project, helping organisations which provide health and social care services to make their services easier to access for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) older people.

We will help organisations to understand how they can make their services easier to access and will give them advice and training.

Age Concern Yorkshire & Humber want BME older people and organisations providing health and social care services to BME older people to be involved in making these services easy to access.

Later Matters aims to:

Progress Measure and Good Practice Guidance

The progress measure and good practice guidance utilise the existing body of research on barriers to health and social care services for BME older people and have been developed through consultation with BME elders, carers and staff from organisations delivering health and social care services in Yorkshire and Humberside.

The progress measure provides the opportunity to undertake a gap analysis of a service in relation to BME older people, plus practical information and guidance on good practice for service providers from both statutory and voluntary sectors on addressing these issues.  It is not a test, simply an effective method of looking at how accessible a service or organisation is to BME older people and to start addressing gaps or barriers identified, as appropriate to different organisations and local areas.

Later Matters Training

The Later Matters Project has been extended until the 30 June 2011 and we are now offering FREE training and copies of the Later Matters Progress Measure and Good Practice Guidance to health and social care professionals to provide them with the skills and knowledge to review how accessible their services are to BME older people and to develop action plans for service improvement. We can offer in-house training for organisations that would like to have over 5 members of staff trained.

There are two training dates available on the WEdnesday 25 May 2011 and Thursday 9 June 2011. Both courses will take place in Leeds city centre between 10am and 4pm.

To request a booking form or to discuss in-house training opportunities please contact Miriam Browne on 0113 2441860 or miriam.browne1@googlemail.com.
