Age Concern Support Services (Yorkshire & Humber) is an independent regional charity which works for the benefit of older people regionally in Yorkshire and Humber. We do this in a number of different ways either through working in partnership with local Age Concerns, or by working independently to identify good practice which can be shared regionally and put into practice for the benefit of older people.

Projects managed by Age Concern Support Services
Age Concern Support Services (Yorkshire & Humber) work on the following projects across the region:
Fit as a Fiddle - Fit as a Fiddle is a unique programme for older people funded by the Big Lottery Fund. It offers new activities and opportunities across Yorkshire and Humber aimed at people 50+, improving fitness, health and wellbeing; from gardening, cookery, walking and chair based exercise to yoga, swimming, tai chi and bowls.
Later Matters –Age Concern Support Services are offering an exciting new training course, helping organisations which provide health and social care services to make their services easier to access for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) older people.
Other projects which we have worked on and are keen to progress subject to funding are:
Depression in Later Life – Stage One was a joint project we developed in partnership with the Yorkshire & Humber Improvement Partnership to raise awareness of Depression in older people. Depression is the most common mental health problem of old age, and up to 25% of people over 65 have clinical signs of Depression. Less than 15% receive diagnosis and active treatment. Depression in Later Life Project - 2009 - Final Report
Depression in Later Life – Stage Two is a joint project with the Strategic Health Authority which involves working with GP practices to consider the courses of treatment available for older people with Depression. We are encouraging GPs to prescribe social activities for older people with mild to moderate depression.
Equalities and Human Rights – with funding from the Equality and Human Rights Commission, we explored the needs and wishes of older people from black and ethnic minorities; older people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and older people who are asylum seekers or refugees, with regard to service provision. We used this information to develop a training course and good practice guidance for service providers and commissioners.
Prisons Project – with funding from the Ministry of Justice, we have developed an older prisoner dignity toolkit for high security prisons. This toolkit provides information, training and dignity assessment tools to enable high security prisons to ensure dignity and fairness for older prisoners. We piloted the work in Wakefield Prison.
