Great Yorkshire Show
On 14/15/16 July 2009, Age Concern Yorkshire & Humber were proud to be part of the Great Yorkshire Show. Our stand was packed with information and booklets and brochures on every subject from Managing your Money to Finding a Care Home, as well as information about many of the individual Age Concerns across the Yorkshire & Humber region.
The weather stayed fine (mostly) which helped to ensure that this years show was the biggest ever with a footfall well in excess of 130,000, making it the most successful show in its 151 year history.
Several hundred of these visitors found their way to the Age Concern stand which was ideally situated close to the Black Sheep Baa....r and centrally located for visitors walking between the retail avenue and the Countryside Alliance.
The stand was manned by members of the Age Concern and Help the Aged regional team staff, Regional company staff and members of a number of local Age Concerns including Age Concern York, Age Concern Calderdale and Kirklees, Age Concern Knaresborough, Age Concern Wakefield, Age Concern Barnsley and Age Concern Bradford who sent a contingent of 6 willing helpers.
On day 3, the Fit as a Fiddle Project workers turned out in force, bringing with them bags of fresh fruit and home made cakes (fatless and sugarless) and other healthy eating items ensuring that the stand was beseiged for most of the day. No-one could resist the trays of fresh fruit on offer and many people took copies of the Fit as a Fiddle Cookbook put together by Angela Dawson of Age Concern Barnsley. The "stress fruits" also proved to be a big hit, with visitors unsure which of the apples, pears and peaches were rubbery or real!
We also discovered that the chairs we took along to rest our own weary feet, were eventually put to a much better use by visitors to the stand who needed to rest their own aching limbs!
